Coupang’s statement ran long, but the government’s response was brief: it expressed regret that Coupang caused confusion.

The government’s response came just four hours after Coupang’s rebuttal—and it was succinct.

Saying it was “regrettable that Coupang caused confusion by unilaterally disclosing information the government had not officially announced,” the government added that it would complete its investigation and then disclose the results transparently.

The move appears aimed at preventing the situation from turning into a “he said, she said” dispute, while also signaling that the government would not be swayed by Coupang’s unilateral claims.

So far, the public-private joint investigation team has requested related materials from Coupang and carried out additional verification procedures.

In this regard, a senior official at the Ministry of Science and ICT said, “It is common for an organization under investigation to report the results of its own internal probe to the government.”

Referring to Coupang’s response, the official stressed the importance of accuracy, saying, “We do not make announcements unless we have thoroughly verified the facts.”

In other words, the findings from the three overseas security firms that Coupang said it commissioned can only be made public after the joint investigation team completes its verification.

Meanwhile, the National Intelligence Service denied media reports claiming that it was the agency that instructed coordination with Coupang and ordered direct contact with the alleged leaker.

The NIS said it is not in a position to issue such instructions and that it never did so.

It added only that it had engaged in routine information-sharing discussions, viewing a large-scale data leak by a foreign national as a potential national security concern.

With two consecutive parliamentary hearings on Coupang scheduled for next week, concerns are growing that unnecessary disputes over post-incident handling could become a key point of contention.
