Deep freeze grips Korea(한국을 강타한 깊은 얼어붙음)

In Gangwon Province, where temperatures dropped below minus 20 degrees Celsius today (12.26), the number of people out and about noticeably declined.

Jeju Island was hit by heavy snow and strong winds, causing multiple incidents of damage.

The Hantangang River cutting across Cheorwon, the northernmost part of Gangwon Province.

In the biting cold, the river’s surface has begun to freeze.

Water cascading from a three-meter-high waterfall has formed ice along the surrounding rocks.

This is usually a popular tourist spot.

But the harsh cold has driven visitors away.

A traditional five-day market that should be bustling with customers is now quiet and deserted.

Shops are wrapped in plastic sheets to block the cold wind, and merchants huddle around heaters, rubbing their hands repeatedly—but the chill is hard to shake.

[Lee Sook-hee/Hwacheon, Gangwon Province: “The dough freezes, so we have to knead it first and keep the heater going. Otherwise, the dough gets too stiff and my husband ends up straining his shoulder.”]

Today, temperatures plunged to minus 22.7°C on Gwangdeoksan in Hwacheon and minus 22.3°C in Imnam, Cheorwon.

With wind chills dropping below minus 30°C, all of Gangwon Province was gripped by the season’s strongest cold wave.

On Jeju Island, where a heavy snow advisory is in effect, about 10 centimeters of snow accumulated on Hallasan Mountain, leading to road closures across mountain areas.

[Lee A-reum/Chinese Resident in Korea: “We came up hoping to go to the 1100 altitude pass, but there’s too much snow and the road is closed, so we can’t go up. Still, just seeing the snow fall makes me feel really happy.”]

Strong winds with gusts reaching 22 meters per second also swept through the island, causing damage including collapsed walls and fallen trees.

강원도 최북단 철원을 가로지르는 한탄강.

살을 에는 듯한 추위 속에서 강 표면이 얼어붙기 시작했습니다.

3미터 높이의 폭포에서 흘러내린 물이 주변 바위를 따라 얼음을 형성했습니다.

이곳은 보통 인기 있는 관광지입니다.

하지만 혹독한 추위로 인해 방문객들이 멀어졌습니다.

고객들로 붐빌 전통 5일장은 이제 조용하고 텅 비어 있습니다.

상점들은 찬바람을 막기 위해 비닐 시트로 싸여 있고, 상인들은 히터 주위에 모여 손을 반복적으로 문지릅니다. 하지만 추위는 떨리기 어렵습니다.

[이숙희/강원도 화천 : "반죽이 얼어서 먼저 반죽을 하고 히터를 계속 켜야 해요. 그렇지 않으면 반죽이 너무 뻣뻣해져서 남편이 결국 어깨에 무리가 가게 돼요."]

오늘 화천 광덕산의 기온이 영하 22.7°C, 철원 임남의 기온이 영하 22.3°C까지 떨어졌습니다.

체감 온도가 영하 30도 이하로 떨어지면서 강원도 전역이 이번 시즌 가장 강력한 한파에 휩싸였습니다.

대설주의보가 발효 중인 제주도에서는 한라산에 약 10센티미터의 눈이 쌓이면서 산악 지역 전역의 도로가 폐쇄되었습니다.

[이아름/한국 주재 중국인 주민 : "1100 고도 고개로 가고 싶어서 올라왔는데 눈이 너무 많이 오고 도로가 폐쇄돼서 올라갈 수가 없어요. 그래도 눈 내리는 것만 봐도 정말 행복해요."]

초속 22미터에 달하는 돌풍과 함께 강한 바람이 섬을 휩쓸어 벽이 무너지고 나무가 쓰러지는 등 피해를 입혔습니다.
