안규백 국방부 장관: 아직 미국 측의 호르무즈 해역 파견 요청은 없었다

Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back stated on the 24th regarding the potential dispatch of naval vessels to the Strait of Hormuz, “Although we have not yet received an official letter from the U.S. side, we are closely cooperating behind the scenes.”


Minister Ahn responded this way during the plenary session of the National Assembly’s Defense Committee to a question from Democratic Party of Korea Rep. Kim Byung-joo, who asked, “Has there been any change in the government’s position on the dispatch issue?” Minister Ahn explained, “We understand that no official request has been made,” adding, “That does not mean there has been no mutual consultation with the U.S. side. We are in close consultation and communication regarding the Middle East conflict.”

Minister Ahn had previously stated on the 17th at the National Assembly that no official request had been received from the U.S. regarding the dispatch to the Strait of Hormuz. However, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun responded the same day at the National Assembly, “The situation is such that it could be considered a request or not.” When asked whether his position differed from that of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Ahn said, “The positions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Defense are not significantly different. There is only a difference in expression.”

On the 14th, U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned on the social media platform (SNS) Truth Social, “I hope that countries affected by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, including China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others, will send warships there.”

The Ministry of National Defense maintains that the Cheonghae Unit is not prepared to carry out missions in the Strait of Hormuz and that parliamentary approval is necessary for any dispatch.

 

안규백 국방부 장관은 24일 호르무즈 해협 해군 함정 파병 가능성과 관련하여 “아직 미국 측으로부터 공식 서한을 받지는 못했지만, 물밑에서 긴밀히 협력하고 있다”고 밝혔다.

안 장관은 국회 국방위원회 본회의에서 더불어민주당 김병주 의원의 “파병 문제에 대한 정부 입장에 변화가 있었느냐”는 질문에 이같이 답했다. 안 장관은 “아직 공식적인 요청은 없었던 것으로 알고 있다”면서도 “그렇다고 해서 미국 측과 협의가 없었던 것은 아니다. 중동 분쟁과 관련해 긴밀히 협의하고 소통하고 있다”고 덧붙였다.

안 장관은 앞서 17일 국회에서 호르무즈 해협 파병과 관련하여 미국 측으로부터 공식적인 요청을 받은 적이 없다고 밝힌 바 있다. 그러나 조현 외교부 장관은 같은 날 국회에서 “요청으로 볼 수도 있고 아닐 수도 있는 상황”이라고 반박한 바 있다. 안국방부 장관은 외교부와의 입장 차이에 대한 질문에 “외교부와 국방부의 입장은 크게 다르지 않다. 표현 방식에 차이가 있을 뿐이다”라고 답했다.

지난 14일 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령은 소셜 미디어 플랫폼 SNS 트루스소셜에 “중국, 프랑스, ​​일본, 한국, 영국 등 호르무즈 해협 봉쇄의 영향을 받는 국가들이 그곳에 군함을 파견하기를 바란다”고 언급했다.

국방부는 청해부대가 호르무즈 해협 임무 수행 준비가 되어 있지 않으며, 파병에는 국회 승인이 필요하다고 강조했다.
